Why I Spent The Day Naked

Well, not the whole day — but only because it was rather chilly.

Today was my birthday. I turned 35. I’m sort of officially a has been now, or something. Or so pop culture would have me believe. Of course, I think pop culture can go sodomize itself and enjoy it. If it’s intoo that kind of thing, of course.

I’m not a big birthday person, so I generally just do whatever I feel like when mine rolls around. Today, that meant mostly jack shit. I woke up early, but lay in bed reading and drinking coffee for a long time. When I finally got up it was simply to move to the couch and fire up the GameCube so I could spend a few hours blithering about with a pile of games my friend let me borrow recently. Fire Emblem and Baten Kaitos — both corny, poorly written Japanese RPG’s — seem like fun time wasters.

I then said hang the quota and spent two hours writing the first junk that came to my mind. Happily, this turned out to be 1500 words of a promising SF short story. The beginning, end, and a nice chunk of the middle. It’s possibly publishable stuff: a weird sort of anthropological post Singularity folk tale. Ahem. Yeah. And it involves Hansel & Gretel. Don’t ask.

My mom roasted a chicken, which I’ve been hankering for. I stuffed myself on that and a really good chocolate cake. Mmm-mmm.

I rejoined Critters online workshop and did my first crit and sent in a manuscript. I started with good ol’ Tessellation. I’ve been thinking of re-writing and polishing the hell out of it. If the process proves handy I’m gonna send Roberta and TWWHWC through as well before hitting them with new stuff. I’ve never really had strangers critique my work before, so I’d prefer to use work I know backwards and forwards for practice. I tend to be rather overprotective of stuff when it’s too new and spiffy to me.

Let’s see — what else. Drank even more coffee. Watched two episodes of DR. WHO I’d been saving up for a special occasion (the Stephen Moffat ep ‘Blink’ was — as usual — fuckin’ fantastic. I think he may be on the road to a three-peat for Dramatic Short Form Hugo wins!)

Then I sat down to tell you all about my inactive, fun, mostly naked day.

Happy birthday to me! :D
